The following is a poem written by Sci-Tech Camper Samantha about what science means to her.
To me, science is the sound of summer.
The sound of feet pounding the floor,
Voices rising and falling in a long hallway.
To me, science is the sound of us
Dancing and singing, jumping and clapping
Science is the sight of 13 girls,
Lying in a field, under the stars,
Sitting in a hallway, laughing,
With scissors and string being passed around
Voices rising and falling, being told off for being too loud by counselors who are being loud themselves
Science is getting up at 7am
To clean, then go to our space.
The space
And area of together.
Watching chemicals mix
Then slowly
Slowly
Watching what happens with a loud
CRACK
Science is lying awake at night,
Sweating
Being tired when 7:00 rolls around
But quickly waking up
Science is learning
Growing
Changing
Making new friends
Playing new games
Insane jokes that make no sense
The sound of showers rapidly turning on and off as we speed through them
Science is hugs
Science is a small room
Cramped, with a desk, a bunk bed, and two dressers
Barely room to walk
Science is package slips, walking into the office
Science is Shabbat
White dresses
The thirteen of us
Singing, Dancing, Praying.
Color wars
Us turned against each other
But only for a day
Only for an afternoon.
Hoping for the summer to never end
For us never to have to part
Science is our last night, seeing each other’s work
Films and Biology
Programming and Earth & Sky
Then
A circle
Our arms around each other singing for the last time
Then
Hugging and crying, singing our last song
Never wanting it to end
Our tears drip to the floor
Fully with each other
Our voices echo
Around the remains of our projects
Around the stethoscopes and fingerprints
Around the computers
Around the hockey rink
On our last night of camp
Science camp.
Science is the sound of summer
